The office of “John Ford”

In Cowboys, Films! on February 24, 2013 at 9:23 pm

Ward Bond plays a hard-drinking director of Westerns and War films in “Wings Of Eagles”, 1957, and John Wayne his new screenwriter, fresh from the VA hospital.

Here’s the Duke in “Blake’s” office, flanked by Harry Carey and Ken Maynard.

Harry makes sense.  Odd choice on Maynard, whose portrait appears twice in the office.

The Cornfields in “This Gun For Hire”

In Films!, LA owns me on January 20, 2013 at 11:12 pm

The men who worked LA’s railway hub down the hill from Broadway and right up next to  Spring Ave called the place “The Cornfields.”  There’s little physical evidence of the place now (a cool park on it’s way to becoming an awesome park) but there is this fantastic pen-ultimate action climax of the 1942 Alan Ladd/Veronica Lake film “This Gun For Hire.”

On a Frankenstein Kick

In Another Film about Fatherhood, Films! on November 14, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I’ve been reading Mary Shelley and watching the Universal versions, the Hammers, and now onward and onward.  This from “Rites of Frankenstein,” 1972.

Having explored the other great horror film about fatherhood, The Shining, I feel like it’s my duty to take this one on.  I’ll let you know how it goes.
